Awards, program fund created in honor of Charles Cole
September 13, 2006

For 35 years, Charles A. Cole was at the forefront of environmental education at Penn State Harrisburg -- and throughout the nation and the world.

School director, professor, Fulbright lecturer and scholar, trainer and consultant, Cole concluded distinguished service to Penn State Harrisburg and the University this summer with his retirement as professor emeritus.

His impact on the campus will be a lasting one, especially on the environmental programs, which he shepherded from infancy to the current mature undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering and graduate environmental pollution control majors. Along the way, he expanded the influence and respect of Penn State Harrisburg and the University far beyond the midstate with his service on numerous state commissions and as an international Fulbright lecturer and scholar. In 1991, he was an American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow at the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C.

In honor of Cole's commitment to environmental education, friends of the campus have contributed funding to establish two awards in his honor.

Under the guidance of Jeff Wendle and Steve Huntzinger, CET Engineering Services has created the CET Engineering Services Award for Environmental Programs in Honor of Dr. Charles A. Cole. The award will honor outstanding achievement by an undergraduate or graduate student who is enrolled in an environmental program.

Ron Drenivich, Bob Dietz, Bill Stout, Jim Elliott and Gene Koontz from Gannett Fleming helped create the Gannett Fleming Award in Honor of Dr. Charles A. Cole that will honor achievement by a student enrolled in an engineering or environmental program in the School of Science, Engineering and Technology.

In addition, combined gifts from a number of individuals and companies have established the Charles A. Cole Program Fund to support educational events on campus. Included in the supporters of the fund are: Hugh Archer at Mavickar Environmental Consultants, Michael Daschbach at Entech Engineering, John Latsha and Max Stoner at Glace Associates, Brian Funkhouser at Buchart Horn and Associates, Bill Hill at William F. Hill and Associates, Michael Gillespie at Envirep and Ed Gillette at Environmental Engineering Management.

Cole, the first recipient of a funded professorship at Penn State Harrisburg, the Berg professor of engineering, is a registered engineer whose research interests include solid waste management, recycling and resource recovery. His commitment to the campus extended to the external community with his role in establishing the Environmental Training Center and the Pennsylvania Recycling Markets Center on campus, linking the expertise of the University with the efforts to improve the quality of life throughout the commonwealth.

Among his other honors were the Research Award from the Water Pollution Control Association of Pennsylvania and its Haseltine Award, the Weston Award for Industrial Waste Control Excellence and the Clean Stream Award from the Water Quality Association.
